Die Daten basieren auf den Berichten der US-Fischerei, sowie auf den des Wildlife. Weitere Infos gibt´s nicht – es werden lediglich die harten Kernfakten aufgetischt.

Irgendwie kommt die Videobotschaft ziemlich spät, meines Erachtens. Um es mal krass auszudrücken, ist die Kacke im Golf von Mexiko schon seit vielen Wochen derbst am Dampfen – aber erst jetzt müht sich BP CEO in einem “Bekennervideo” zu der Ölkatastrophe, die wirtschaftlich Milliarden Schäden angerichtet hat und es noch werden tut. Ganz zu schweigen von dem Naturellen unwiderbringbaren Schaden ..

BP has taken full responsibility for cleaning up the spill in the Gulf. We’ve helped organize the largest environmental response in this country’s history. More than 2 million feet of boom, 30 planes and over 1,300 boats are working to protect the shoreline. Where oil reaches the shore, thousands of people are ready to clean it up. We will honor all legitimate claims and our clean-up efforts will not come at any cost to taxpayers.

To those affected and your families, I’m deeply sorry. The Gulf is home for thousands of BP employees and we all feel the impact. To all the volunteers and for the strong support of the government, thank you. We know it is our responsibility to keep you informed and do everything we can so this never happens again.

We will get this done. We will make this right.

Es ist klar, dass zukunftsorientiert bei diesem aktuell prekären Fall im Golf von Mexiko gedacht werden muss. Was kann, was wird, was bleibt? Alles Fragen, mit denen sich bereits einige Wissenschaftler und “so genannte” Experten auseinandergesetzt haben. Eine neues “Szenario” zeigt auf, dass sich der riesige Ölteppich bereits in wenigen Monaten – also noch in diesem Sommer, den Weg auf den freien Ozean bahnen könnte.

Bereits binnen 120 Tage könnte der Ölteppich seine Arme in den Atlantik ausgebreitet haben. “Könnte”, nicht muss!

The computer simulations indicate that, once the oil in the uppermost ocean has become entrained in the Gulf of Mexico’s fast-moving Loop Current, it is likely to reach Florida’s Atlantic coast within weeks. It can then move north as far as about Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, with the Gulf Stream, before turning east. Whether the oil will be a thin film on the surface or mostly subsurface due to mixing in the uppermost region of the ocean is not known.

Ocean currents likely to carry oil to Atlantic

This animation shows one scenario of how oil released at the location of the Deepwater Horizon disaster on April 20 in the Gulf of Mexico may move in the upper 65 feet of the ocean. This is not a forecast, but rather, it illustrates a likely dispersal pathway of the oil for roughly four months following the spill. It assumes oil spilling continuously from April 20 to June 20. The colors represent a dilution factor ranging from red (most concentrated) to beige (most diluted). The dilution factor does not attempt to estimate the actual barrels of oil at any spot; rather, it depicts how much of the total oil from the source that will be carried elsewhere by ocean currents. For example, areas showing a dilution factor of 0.01 would have one-hundredth the concentration of oil present at the spill site.

Wenn wir von Dimensionen sprechen, die ein Lineal überschreiten, wirds meist schwer, sich das bildlich vorzustellen. Das weiss auch Andy Lintner. Also hat er auf seiner Webseite ein kleines Tool arangiert, dass es ermöglicht, den Ölteppich – via Google Maps – auf jede beliebige Region der Welt zu verschieben, und so ein “Gefühl” für das Ausmass der Katastrophe zu bekommen.
